The animals

How much does a snow leopard or a gorilla cost?

To us, animals are priceless and cannot be quantified in terms of money. This is all the more true when speaking about endangered species such as the gorilla or the snow leopard. For ethical reasons and with a conservation-based approach in mind, zoological parks have removed the concept of monetary value with regards to animal exchanges. Zoos function through exchanges and breeding loans; all of Beauval’s animals come from other zoological parks.

How many species are there at Beauval?

Beauval is home to 35,000 animals belonging to 800 different species, living in an area of 45 hectares.

I have specific questions about animals, for a school project. Who should I contact?

Due to the number of enquiries we receive, we invite you to consult our website for a wide range of animal-related information.

I found an injured animal in the wild, what should I do?

We advise you to contact the 'Centre de Soins Beauval Nature - Françoise Delord pour la faune sauvage’, a centre authorised to take in and care for injured wild animals, by calling 0800 080 000. A facilitator will advise you on the procedure to follow. To find out more about the species that can be treated, visit the 'Centre de Soins’ website.

I would like to have a baby lion or a baby monkey, how can I get one?

You can’t! Neither big cats nor primates are meant to be pets. Chimpanzees, to give just one example, can become extremely powerful and dangerous once they reach adulthood. In addition, it is not possible to improvise being an animal keeper, as serious knowledge of the species concerned is required. Furthermore, these species, some of which are endangered, are often included in breeding and conservation programmes. The possession of exotic pets creates many problems, especially when such individuals are released into the wild (birds, small mammals, reptiles, etc.). In fact, the possession of exotic pets by members of the public is often prohibited. Be warned!

Can the animals be seen all year round?

The activity of a zoological park in winter is not the same as in summer. While some animals move into their shelters due to low outdoor temperatures, many of them can still be observed in the tropical greenhouses or via viewing windows.

My pet is ill, can the park’s clinic treat it?

No, Beauval’s veterinary clinic cannot treat pets. The clinic only treats the ZooParc de Beauval’s animals. The same applies to the 'Centre de Soins Beauval Nature’: it does not accept pets. We suggest you contact a veterinary clinic that does treat pets.

Can I feed the animals?

Each animal has a feeding regime that is adapted to its species; being given foods that are not part of this diet can make them seriously ill. It is therefore strictly forbidden to feed the animals.

Can I sponsor an animal?

Yes, there are about forty animals that can be sponsored. Your sponsorship helps finance conservation and research programmes that protect endangered species. Thanks to your support, the Beauval Nature association can take effective action throughout the world. To sponsor an animal, click here.

Can I have a special moment with my favourite animal?

No, unless you sponsor them. For health, safety, insurance, and animal welfare reasons, the various sponsorship options we offer do not allow you to approach the animal that you have sponsored.

However, as part of the € 1000 option, the sponsor will be able to meet a member of the Beauval Nature association or a Beauval employee, depending on their availability, for approximately 30 minutes. During this time, the sponsor will find out more information about their sponsored animal in an area that is accessible to ZooParc de Beauval visitors. The sponsor will therefore be able to go as far behind the scenes as possible, to see their sponsored animal right up close, accompanied by a member of staff.

How much food is given to the animals each day?

At Beauval, more than five tons of food are consumed by the ZooParc’s animals each day!

Which animals are found nowhere else in France and can only be seen at Beauval?

The ZooParc is home to many species found nowhere else in France such as giant pandas, koalas, a pair of yellow-backed duikers, the only pair of harpy eagles in metropolitan France, and a group of red-shanked douc langurs.

Télécabine Le Nuage de Beauval

What is the purpose of the cable car at Beauval?

The cable car is a means of transport that makes it easier to visit the park (especially for people with disabilities), as it allows travel from one end of the park to the other in just a few minutes. The 'Nuage de Beauval’ provides an exceptional experience for our visitors, offering them a new perspective of the park and its animals.

What are its key advantages?

It’s a means of transport that is quiet and environmentally friendly, being the mode of public transport that emits the least amount of CO₂ per person. This new facility reflects Beauval’s desire to limit its impact through environmentally-friendly transport.

Which animals does the 'Nuage’ fly over?

Visitors aboard the 'Nuage de Beauval’ will fly over the habitats of the elephants, okapis, Tasmanian devils, gorillas, sea lions, and bongos. But the cable car also offers a panoramic view of many of the park’s other species (rhinoceroses, giraffes, hippos, lions, etc.). Not to mention a breathtaking view of 2023's new addition: the Great South American Aviary.

What is the impact on the animals? Is the cable car noisy?

The cable car makes very little noise. The only noises are those heard in the stations. Since the cable car opened in 2019, the animals along its route have shown no particular signs of stress. Only the gorillas were a little curious during the first few days of operation, and got used to its presence.

Isn’t it dangerous for birds?

In order to protect wild animals, bird diverters have been placed on a cable above the main cable of the cable car.

Is access to the cable car free?

No ticket is required to board the 'Nuage de Beauval’. Use of the cable car is included in the ZooParc admission ticket, the Standard ZooPass, and Premium ZooPass, at no extra cost. And for as many trips as you want.

I have a Standard ZooPass/Premium ZooPass, how do I use my queue-jump privileges?

As of 13 November 2023, the new Standard ZooPass and Premium ZooPass packages offer privileged access to the cable car, with a queue-jump for up to 6 people. This privilege was previously only reserved for Premium ZooPass holders. To make use of this benefit, simply present your Standard ZooPass or Premium ZooPass card to the operator, who will check its validity period. The Standard ZooPass and Premium ZooPass cards are valid for one year from the date of purchase. Each plan has its own advantages and benefits. If you purchased your ZooPass before 13 November, you will retain your advantages and rewards for the entire period of validity of your ZooPass. Naturally, if you purchased a ZooPass after 13 November, your advantages will be those of the new packages and will also be valid for one year. Find out more here

Is it possible to enter the cabins with pushchairs or wheelchairs?

Yes, the cabins are designed to accommodate wheelchairs and pushchairs.

Are dogs allowed in the cabins?

With the exception of guide dogs and assistance dogs for people with disabilities, animals are not allowed inside the 'Nuage de Beauval’.

Does the cable car operate all year round?

Yes, it is open all year round except in the event of extreme weather conditions (see below). For information, the cable car may be closed for 3 or 4 days in January for safety checks.

Consult the 'Nuage de Beauval’ opening times and dates.

How long does it take to get from the Elephant Station to the Lion Station?

Various speeds are possible, depending on weather conditions and passenger numbers. Travel duration can vary between 3m 40s and 5m 20s, depending on the speed. The journey duration is therefore approximately 4 minutes.

What is the maximum height of the 'Nuage de Beauval’ above the park?

The cabins rise more than 40 metres above the ground.

What distance is covered by the cable car above the park?

The cable car will transport you for 800 m, between the two stations.

How many cabins are there in total?

The 'Nuage de Beauval’ has 24 cabins in total: 16 classic cabins and 8 with glass floor panels (1 cabin in 3). In order to facilitate the flow of passengers and shorten your wait to board the 'Nuage de Beauval’, we ask you to follow the instructions of our staff as they invite you to enter the cabin in front of you. For technical and safety reasons, our cable car only has a few glass-floored cabins (1 out of 3). It is not possible to choose your cabin. However, as the 'Nuage de Beauval’ is free and accessible to all, there’s nothing to stop you trying your luck again!

What is the capacity of each cabin?

The maximum capacity is 8 people (or 600 kg), including children.

What is the maximum capacity per day?

Approximately 2,400 people can travel from one end of the park to the other every hour.

What happens if the door doesn’t close properly?

If the door does not close completely, a mechanical sensor located in the cabin will automatically bring the cable car to a complete stop.

Can the cable car operate in all weather conditions?

Our drivers are informed of the weather conditions and pay particular attention to wind speed and direction. At wind speeds of 31 m/s (70 mph) or more, the 'Nuage de Beauval’ is closed down.

What is the Beauval Nature association?

The Beauval Nature association, created in 2009 by Beauval, implements, develops, and supports conservation actions aiming to preserve the world’s biodiversity, as well as scientific research programmes that enable us to learn more about animals and therefore protect them effectively.

Beauval Nature aims to raise awareness among the general public, and especially visitors to the ZooParc de Beauval, about the need for such actions. We invite you to visit the Beauval Nature website.

What does the ZooParc de Beauval do to help local biodiversity?

The Beauval Nature association runs a number of projects in France to conserve local wild fauna, which is crucial for maintaining the balance of ecosystems and regulating species. The ZooParc was awarded LPO Refuge* certification in June 2021, testifying to its commitment to the flora and fauna of the Loir-et-Cher region. This involves long-term work to protect birds, bats, amphibians, insects, reptiles, etc., and conducting censuses on them. Beauval went one step further in spring 2023 with the opening of the 'Centre de Soins Beauval Nature - Françoise Delord’, the largest care centre for wild animals in the Centre-Val de Loire Region. Boasting state-of-the-art equipment, its mission is to take in, treat, and then release injured animals.

What specific actions does Beauval Nature undertake?

The association manages or supports projects taking place on five different continents including reintroducing animals into the wild (langurs in Java, gorillas in Gabon, Andean condors in Patagonia, etc.), providing financial support for NGOs, collaborating on scientific research, releasing emergency funds, etc. Beauval Nature is committed to working in the field alongside local partners who are striving to preserve biodiversity, be it plant or animal. In March 2021, the association took over the management of the Help Congo programme, which helps chimpanzees and conducts censuses of the local biodiversity in the Conkouati-Douli National Park. Meanwhile, in France, the ZooParc has become an LPO Refuge protecting local flora and fauna, and in spring, 2023, Beauval went one step further with the opening of a care centre for animals in distress. What are the missions of a zoo like the ZooParc de Beauval?

The primary role of the ZooParc de Beauval is to help preserve and protect endangered species around the world. To this end, we have created the 'Beauval Nature’ association, which supports numerous projects and associations working in the field throughout the world.

The ZooParc also plays a role in raising the general public’s awareness. By meeting the animals, and through the information we give them, our visitors become aware, if they are not already, of the importance of safeguarding our planet’s biodiversity.

Who created Beauval?

Beauval was created in 1980 by Françoise Delord, a lady who was passionate about birds and the animal world. Her crazy gamble became an extraordinary success: ranked among the top 4 zoos in the world (by TripAdvisor in 2018)! To find out more, visit our page.
